Alternatives to Masters in administration

I came across an article, which gave me a handful of alternatives to an MBA, and i would like to share the same with you.

The article has been taken directly from http://encarta.msn.com/encnet/departments/elearning/?article=alternativestothemba

Degrees and training

Alternatives to the M.B.A.
Today's workers need to plan on being fired. You can do a great job every day, but your division or your product line or your location may simply be eliminated by organizational realities far beyond your control. So career marketability is more important than ever. Your current employer may know what you can do, but can you prove to prospective employers that you have what it takes to make contributions? That's the acid test, and that's why educational credentials are more important than ever.

To be sure you are ready in case you need to jump ship--or just to grasp that next rung on the ladder--you will almost certainly need education beyond a bachelor's degree. Many careerists facing this reality reflexively reach for the M.B.A., the Swiss Army knife of master's degrees. But is that the best degree choice for you? The M.B.A. requires heavy quantitative skills you may lack, prerequisite courses in economics and accounting you may have skipped, and so on. Besides, the M.B.A., even with its second-year concentrations, is a generalized degree that may not give you the specialized training that you need. Perhaps it's time to consider some of these alternatives to the M.B.A.

Master's in Advertising or Marketing--Instead of choosing an M.B.A. with a concentration in advertising or marketing, pursue a degree that focuses entirely on these interests. Advertising and marketing programs have rigorous curricula involving, for example, psychographics, demographics, and appropriate analytics and business metrics, but without the survey of general business topics you would find in an M.B.A. program.

Master of Human Resources--If you have a career in human resources, and intend to stay in HR, this is the obvious choice for you. It is far more beneficial to focus on the law, policy, best practices, and theory of your chosen field than to spend time on such arcane subjects as general corporate finance.

Master's in Organization Development--Organization development (OD) is a relatively new field, focusing on the human side of organizational systems. In short, OD is a human-focused, systems-based approach to addressing organizational problems. If you want to learn how to build teams, resolve conflict, design information flows, deal with organizational culture, create large-scale organizational change, or develop post-merger integration strategies, then OD might be right for you.

Master of Public Administration--If you work in the public sector, for a government contractor, for a major nongovernmental organization (NGO) or nonprofit, or in any type of highly bureaucratic organizational structure, this degree may be a good choice for you. M.B.A. programs focus on the needs of major corporate organizations, and outside the corporate world, the types of information flows, information technology (IT), finance, and regulatory environments are different.

Master of Public Policy--Although popular in the same sectors as public administration, the public-policy curriculum is more theoretical and more analytical than the focus of the Master of Public Administration (M.P.A.) People with M.P.A.s do things--people with M.P.P.s think about how things should be done. The M.P.P. degree is popular in public-sector consulting, think tanks, policy-setting and regulatory environments, and with such glamour employers as the United Nations.

Master of Public Health--If you work in health care, or in a government agency concerned with health-care delivery, then the MPH can be an excellent choice. The MPH is a wide-ranging degree, with curricula that may range from epidemiology to immigrant/nonnative communications and marketing, to public finance.

Master of Health-Care Administration--This is a more specialized degree choice than the MPH, appropriate for people who plan career advancement within a hospital, insurer, health maintenance organization (HMO), hospice, gerontology center, adult daycare, extended-care facility, or similar. One variant is the Master of Hospital Administration, which is obviously for people who plan to advance within a hospital setting.

Master of Sports Administration--This degree is self-explanatory, but with a caveat: It is sometimes more popular with aspirants than with practitioners. You need sports experience, either as part of the degree program or before you even enter, in order to get the maximum career benefit. If you plan to run a college athletic program, work in professional or Olympic sports, or even run a youth sports league, this degree may fit.

Master of Educational Administration--This degree can focus on primary/secondary education, or on higher education, but usually not both, so be sure you choose a program with the concentration that interests you most. There are many variants, such as the M.Ed. with a concentration in administration, or the M.A. in student affairs.

Master of Arts Administration--If you want to work in the business side of museums, theater, public art, or music, then this degree may be perfect for you. As with sports administration, if you want this degree to help you in your career, you need to have internships or experience in arts administration at some point before you graduate.

Master's in Urban Planning--City and regional-planning degrees are not just for planning officers. Architecture firms, construction companies, commercial and residential developers, and such specialized firms as shopping-center design consultants will employ and advance people with this degree.

Master's in International Relations--The MIR will help anyone in business, government, nonprofit, or NGO environments with transnational or international business to conduct. Candidates should speak more than one language proficiently before entering this type of program. Career success with an MIR hinges on the student having lived overseas prior to entering the degree program. As with some of these other choices, an MIR without the right experiences may have little career impact. And just for the record, the U.S. diplomatic corps use the Foreign Service Written Exam (FSWE) as an entrance requirement, not a master's degree.

There are dozens more examples of alternatives to the M.B.A., such as the MSIA (master of science in industrial administration) or the MEM (master of engineering management). Any master's degree will have career value as you gain valuable transferable skills, but some of these degrees make more sense than the M.B.A. for people with specific career plans. To learn more about master's degree choices, the comprehensive source is Graduate & Professional Programs: An Overview: Full Listing of Degree Programs by Field, by Thomson Peterson's Publishing. This is the only one-volume resource listing every accredited degree program in the United States. Of course, Internet searches can also lead you to many excellent alternatives to the M.B.A., one of which may be perfect for you.

My opinion about Australia and Racism

The last week of May 2009 has witnessed many a “racial attacks on Indian students”. I personally believe that it is not a racial attack. It is personal opinion. I don’t know how others feel about the same.

But as an Indian student studying in Australia I have never come across the so called “Racism” in Australia. I personally believe that Racism occurs between a minority and a majority group of people. Here in Australia there is neither a majority nor a minority of any groups. It is more of a cosmopolitan country giving its space to people from all over the world be it china or Malaysia, India or Pakistan, Saudi Arabian or African, American or Russian. People of all different nationalities live here in harmony.

The crime rates are very low compared to that of India and other nations. I do believe that it is human nature to react when provoked. Many Indian students here don’t behave well. They take law into their hands and tend to provoke the Aussies and create issues out of nothing. They don’t follow rules and sometimes create havoc in public places. Not all Indians are this way. But there are some which make the fish pond dirty.

The attacks that recently took place in Melbourne are true, and no one can get rid of the fact that it could happen again. No one knows why it happened or how it happened. What exactly was the reason for these attacks? What exactly happened before the students were attacked? All of us know just one side of the story. And moreover in my previous post it clear that the Indian Media is hyping the whole issue.

They have abso – bloody – lutely glorified the issue. Many of us are here to build our future and fulfill our dreams. If you have faith in yourself and if you can be yourself and behave properly with people of other nationalities you will definitely be successful here. If we could respect the culture and respect the knowledge delivered to us, we would be a little more mature in handling matters such as this. It is important that each one of us who come here remember the reason why we are here and work towards achieving it and not indulge into things that could bring us trouble.

Many people have asked me if they should change their plans and go to another country. I would like to ask you when you are in INDIA whether you can leave your house unlocked in India and go for a holiday, whether you can keep your main door open all day and night and happily resort to watching movies in your bedroom? Whether you can let ur grandparents live alone at home when you are off to college? whether you can trust the servant you works at your place ?
Now that I am in AUSTRALIA I can happily say “YES” to the above questions.

How many people are stabbed in INDIA every hour? What about the ones who are murdered and killed in road accidents every hour in India!! Why doesn’t one raise his voice against those Indians!! Why is India not questioned now? Why can’t CNN IBN question the public on such cases? Why can’t it hold debates and create fake videos and make fake stories over and over again?
One Indian is stabbed with a screw driver in a different land and the whole country is blamed for!! The whole education system is held to be wrong!! The Society is blamed to be fake!!
AUSTRALIA IS NOT A RACISIT SOCIETY.
As I write this I can’t be sure whether I will come across racism in Australia. But I am confident about myself that I can pull it off. I am confident that I survive it. I am confident that it is not a big issue to face racism.

Remember the days you were ragged by your seniors in college, it is probably something similar. It is up to us to take it sportily or seriously.

It is a beautiful country, come and fullfill your dreams, it will welcome you with open arms, it will never hesitate to make you feel comfortable where ever you are, in whatever condition you are, it will never make you feel home sick. Though my heart resides in INDIA and will be there for the rest of my life, Brisbane is my new home till I full fill my dreams, it could be your's some day.
So don't hesitate, pack your bags and embrace it whole heartedly. If you don't study here, you are sure to miss something big in life. What is the use of regretting late ??

Australia Attacking Indian Students - How much of it is true

Attacks on Indian Students in Australia.

Many a students have been attacked lately. It is a matter of concern. However the crime rate in Australia is much lower than that of India.

Interestingly I have realized that Indian Media is recently hyping the whole issue of Attack on Indian Students in Australia.

I actually bumped into some proof and would like to share it with you.

Here is the link of what is being reported on CNN IBN

http://ibnlive.in.com/videos/93725/india-mounts-pressure-aus-says-indians-soft-target.html

Watch the video properly. The first thing you will see a blazing tower. It is claimed by the news reader that it is the rented house of 25 year old Rajesh Kumar. A petrol bomb was thrown at him when was sitting in his drawing room.

You can clearly see the logo on “FairMax Media” in the video.

Now check the report on this page of Sydney morning herald.

http://www.smh.com.au/national/centrepoint-tower-blaze-smoke-billows-over-the-city-20090525-bjst.html

The same bit of video telling us a different story.

CNN IBN claims that the boy’s house is in Harris Park and the blazing fire is definitely from Sydney centre Point.

Guys where is Harris Park ? And Where is Sydney Centre Point???

Google tells me it’s approximately 20kms.

Whom should I believe??

Please clarify if Indian News channel are giving you right information.

LOL :P I could be wrong!!!

* Important: If you nominate one of the above specialist computing occupations, you will only be awarded MODL points if your skills assessment from the relevant Australian assessing body – the Australian Computer Society (ACS) states you have met the criteria to be recognised in one of the above specialisations.

Skills assessments provided to successful applicants will state:

  • the ASCO Code for Computer Professional not elsewhere classified (nec) with the specialisation stated in brackets - for example, 2231-79 (SAP) and
  • the statement: 'Based on the provided certified documentation, it is my opinion that the applicant has 12 months experience in (name of specialisation, for example, SAP)'.

Note: If you have a skills assessment which only states the ASCO Code for 'Computer Professional nec 2231-79', you are not eligible to be awarded MODL points. A new assessment with the above information will be required if you wish to claim MODL points.

How often does the MODL change?

The MODL is reviewed twice a year to take into consideration existing and emerging skills shortages. This does not mean the list is changed twice a year. Changes only occur if there has been a significant change in labour market trends.

As the MODL may change from time to time, you are advised to check the current MODL at the time you are lodging your visa application.

How are occupation points awarded on the points test?

If your nominated occupation is on MODL either at the time your application is lodged or assessed, you will be eligible for 'occupation in demand/job offer' points on the General Skilled Migration points test. You will receive extra points if you have a job offer from a suitable Australian employer.

What is a 'suitable Australian employer'?

A 'suitable Australian employer' is an employer that has employed at least 10 people on a full-time basis for the previous two (2) financial years.

If you intend to claim points for 'occupation in demand/job offer' you are required to submit documentary evidence that your proposed employer meets these requirements. This evidence should include:

  • a letter of offer from your prospective employer on official letterhead of the company which states the full address of the company and any telephone, fax numbers, e-mail and website addresses
  • the name and position of the person authorised to sign the employment reference typed or stamped below that person's signature - a reference with an illegible signature will not be accepted
  • details of the position you are being offered, the main five duties to be undertaken, and the salary level
  • details of the organisation making the job offer, including the number of people it has employed on a full-time basis for the previous two (2) years

The department will make any necessary checks to ensure that the information provided is correct.

Temporary Residency In Australia

All the following information has been taken from http://www.immi.gov.au/media/fact-sheets/47temporary_residence.htm#a - The australian immigration website.

Australia’s temporary residence program is designed to allow overseas people to come to Australia for specific purposes that benefit Australia. The program consists of three categories:

  • skilled
  • social and cultural
  • international relations.

Temporary residents are required to pay taxes on income earned in Australia. They do not have access to social welfare benefits or national public health cover.

We as students would come under the skilled categories

Skilled visa classes

Business Entry visas - allow employers to recruit skilled people from overseas for a stay of up to four years. The position being filled must meet minimum skill and salary thresholds.
See: Fact Sheet 48 Helping Skilled and Business People

Educational visas - allow education and research institutions or organisations to fill academic, teaching and research positions, unable to be filled from the Australian labour market.

Temporary Medical Practitioner visas - allow employers, or in some cases Government or community bodies to sponsor suitably qualified medical practitioners into positions which satisfy labour market requirements, for a stay of up to four years. Visa grants to medical practitioners have a strong focus on providing service to rural and remote communities.

Fact Sheet 48

The Australian Government is committed to helping highly skilled individuals and successful business people to settle permanently in Australia.

The Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) has introduced specific initiatives designed to help Australian businesses obtain overseas staff with a minimum of formalities, and to help overseas people either conduct or establish business in Australia.

These measures recognise that Australian businesses must have access to skills, ideas, contacts and technology from overseas to be successful in today’s increasingly global economy. They may need to recruit overseas staff with qualifications and relevant work experience to meet specific skill shortages in Australia.

There are also benefits for Australia in attracting experienced overseas business people to either establish or join businesses in Australia, bringing with them investments, new ideas and the prospect of creating new jobs.

Skilled migrants for permanent residence

There are a number of categories in the Skill Stream to enable successful business people and highly skilled and qualified people to migrate to Australia. These include:

  • Skilled – Independent: for skilled people who are not sponsored but are selected on the basis of their skills, age and English language ability.
    See:
Fact Sheet 24 Overview of skilled migration to Australia
    Fact Sheet 25 Skilled categories
  • Skilled – Sponsored: for skilled people who are sponsored by an eligible Australian relative in Australia or nominated by a state or territory government. Applicants are selected on the basis of their skills, age and English language ability.
    See:
Fact Sheet 24 Overview of skilled migration to Australia
    Fact Sheet 25 Skilled categories
  • Skilled – Regional Sponsored: for skilled people who wish to live and work in a Specified Regional Area ('designated' or 'regional' area) in Australia but are unable to meet the criteria to be granted a permanent visa.
Applicants for this visa must be sponsored by an eligible Australian relative or nominated by a state or territory government. Successful applicants are granted a three-year temporary visa to give them time to satisfy the residence and employment criteria for a permanent visa.
    See:
Fact Sheet 26 State Specific Regional Migration
  • Skill Matching Database: The Skills Matching Database lists the educational, occupational and personal details of Skilled – Independent category applicants and Skilled – Sponsored applicants.
The database is regularly updated and distributed to all state and territory governments and a network of regional development authorities.
Employers can nominate people from the database to fill vacancies that cannot be filled through the local labour market. State and territory governments can nominate people from the database on the basis of skill shortages they have identified.
See: Fact Sheet 28 Skill Matching Database
  • Business Skills: Under the Business Skills (provisional) category, people with backgrounds as business owners, senior executives or investors can apply for a provisional (temporary) visa in the first instance. After satisfactory evidence of a specified level of business or investment activity in Australia, Business Skills (provisional) visa holders can apply for permanent residence. In line with their economic development objectives, state and territory governments can also sponsor applicants in these categories with lower level criteria applying to sponsored applicants. High-calibre business migrants, sponsored by a state or territory government, may obtain up-front direct permanent residence under the Business Talent (migrant) category.
    See:
Fact Sheet 24 Overview of skilled migration to Australia
Fact Sheet 27 Business skills migration
  • Employer nomination: people nominated or ‘sponsored’ by employers through schemes such as the Employer Nomination Scheme, Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme and negotiated Labour Agreements or Invest Australia Supported Skills agreements.
    See:
Fact Sheet 24 Overview of Skilled migration to Australia
Fact Sheet 26 State Specific Regional Migration
Most of us would come under the Skilled Independent so let us have a look at Fact sheet 24

Skilled indepentdant visa

Fact sheet 24

The Skill Stream of Australia's Migration Program is specifically designed to target migrants who have skills or outstanding abilities that will contribute to the Australian economy.

The Australian Government continues to emphasise skilled migration, while maintaining a commitment to family reunion migration. The migration to Australia of people with qualifications and relevant work experience helps to address specific skill shortages in Australia and enhances the size and skill level of the Australian labour force.

In 2005–06, the Skill Stream of the Migration Program had an outcome of 97 340 people. This increased to 97 920 in 2006–07.

In 2006–07 the Skill Stream represented about 66 per cent of the Migration Program.

In 2006–07, the outcome in the State Specific and Regional Migration (SSRM) initiatives was 25 845.

The Skill Stream planning level for 2007–08 is 108 500, with a continued emphasis on:

  • employer sponsored migration
  • state/territory government sponsored applications
  • applicants who nominate an occupation which is on the Migration Occupations in Demand List (MODL).

Skill Stream categories

There are four main categories of skilled migrants:

1. General Skilled Migration

There is a range of visa options under General Skilled Migration for skilled workers who want to live in Australia and who do not have an employer sponsoring them.

Independent migrants are selected on the basis of their age, skills, qualifications, English language, ability and employability so they can contribute quickly to the Australian economy. They are not sponsored by an employer or relative in Australia. This group forms the largest component of skilled migrants each year. In 2006-07, the outcome in the skilled independent category was 54 179, representing 55 per cent of the skill stream.

For those unable to meet the independent criteria sponsorship by an eligible Australian relative or nomination by a state or territory government is also possible under GSM.
See:
Fact Sheet 25 Skilled Categories
Fact Sheet 26 State Specific Regional Migration

2. Employer nomination

Employers may nominate (or 'sponsor') personnel from overseas through the following categories:

  • The Employer Nomination Scheme (ENS) allows Australian employers to nominate overseas workers for permanent residence in Australia to fill skilled vacancies in their business.
  • The Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme (RSMS) is one of the several government initiatives designed to help state and terrritory governments in their efforts to boost nominated overseas workers for permanent residence to fill skilled vacancies in their business.

The RSMS is one of several government initiatives designed to help state and territory governments in their efforts to boost development in regional Australia and less populated states/territories.

  • A Labour Agreement enables Australian employers to recruit a specified number of workers from overseas in response to identified or emerging labour market (or skill) shortages. This is a formal arrangement negotiated between the Commonwealth Government and the employer or industry association.
  • In 2006–07, the outcome in the Employer Nominated categories was 16 585.

See: Fact Sheet 48 Assisting Skilled and Business People

3. Business skills migration

The Business Skills Program encourages successful business people to settle permanently in Australia and develop new business opportunities.

In 2006–07, the business skills migration outcome was 5 836.

See: Fact Sheet 27 Business skills migration.

4. Distinguished talent

This is a small category for distinguished individuals with special or unique talents of benefit to Australia.

The profiles of people who have been successful under this category generally include sports people, musicians, artists and designers, all of whom were internationally recognised as outstanding in their field. In 2007–08, the outcome for this category was 211.

Now again we would come under the category of General skilled migration so let us have a look at Fact Sheet 25
