The last week of May 2009 has witnessed many a “racial attacks on Indian students”. I personally believe that it is not a racial attack. It is personal opinion. I don’t know how others feel about the same.
But as an Indian student studying in Australia I have never come across the so called “Racism” in Australia. I personally believe that Racism occurs between a minority and a majority group of people. Here in Australia there is neither a majority nor a minority of any groups. It is more of a cosmopolitan country giving its space to people from all over the world be it china or Malaysia, India or Pakistan, Saudi Arabian or African, American or Russian. People of all different nationalities live here in harmony.
The crime rates are very low compared to that of India and other nations. I do believe that it is human nature to react when provoked. Many Indian students here don’t behave well. They take law into their hands and tend to provoke the Aussies and create issues out of nothing. They don’t follow rules and sometimes create havoc in public places. Not all Indians are this way. But there are some which make the fish pond dirty.
The attacks that recently took place in Melbourne are true, and no one can get rid of the fact that it could happen again. No one knows why it happened or how it happened. What exactly was the reason for these attacks? What exactly happened before the students were attacked? All of us know just one side of the story. And moreover in my previous post it clear that the Indian Media is hyping the whole issue.
They have abso – bloody – lutely glorified the issue. Many of us are here to build our future and fulfill our dreams. If you have faith in yourself and if you can be yourself and behave properly with people of other nationalities you will definitely be successful here. If we could respect the culture and respect the knowledge delivered to us, we would be a little more mature in handling matters such as this. It is important that each one of us who come here remember the reason why we are here and work towards achieving it and not indulge into things that could bring us trouble.
Many people have asked me if they should change their plans and go to another country. I would like to ask you when you are in INDIA whether you can leave your house unlocked in India and go for a holiday, whether you can keep your main door open all day and night and happily resort to watching movies in your bedroom? Whether you can let ur grandparents live alone at home when you are off to college? whether you can trust the servant you works at your place ?
Now that I am in AUSTRALIA I can happily say “YES” to the above questions.
How many people are stabbed in INDIA every hour? What about the ones who are murdered and killed in road accidents every hour in India!! Why doesn’t one raise his voice against those Indians!! Why is India not questioned now? Why can’t CNN IBN question the public on such cases? Why can’t it hold debates and create fake videos and make fake stories over and over again?
One Indian is stabbed with a screw driver in a different land and the whole country is blamed for!! The whole education system is held to be wrong!! The Society is blamed to be fake!!
AUSTRALIA IS NOT A RACISIT SOCIETY.
As I write this I can’t be sure whether I will come across racism in Australia. But I am confident about myself that I can pull it off. I am confident that I survive it. I am confident that it is not a big issue to face racism.
Remember the days you were ragged by your seniors in college, it is probably something similar. It is up to us to take it sportily or seriously.
It is a beautiful country, come and fullfill your dreams, it will welcome you with open arms, it will never hesitate to make you feel comfortable where ever you are, in whatever condition you are, it will never make you feel home sick. Though my heart resides in INDIA and will be there for the rest of my life, Brisbane is my new home till I full fill my dreams, it could be your's some day.
So don't hesitate, pack your bags and embrace it whole heartedly. If you don't study here, you are sure to miss something big in life. What is the use of regretting late ??
