My opinion about Australia and Racism

The last week of May 2009 has witnessed many a “racial attacks on Indian students”. I personally believe that it is not a racial attack. It is personal opinion. I don’t know how others feel about the same.

But as an Indian student studying in Australia I have never come across the so called “Racism” in Australia. I personally believe that Racism occurs between a minority and a majority group of people. Here in Australia there is neither a majority nor a minority of any groups. It is more of a cosmopolitan country giving its space to people from all over the world be it china or Malaysia, India or Pakistan, Saudi Arabian or African, American or Russian. People of all different nationalities live here in harmony.

The crime rates are very low compared to that of India and other nations. I do believe that it is human nature to react when provoked. Many Indian students here don’t behave well. They take law into their hands and tend to provoke the Aussies and create issues out of nothing. They don’t follow rules and sometimes create havoc in public places. Not all Indians are this way. But there are some which make the fish pond dirty.

The attacks that recently took place in Melbourne are true, and no one can get rid of the fact that it could happen again. No one knows why it happened or how it happened. What exactly was the reason for these attacks? What exactly happened before the students were attacked? All of us know just one side of the story. And moreover in my previous post it clear that the Indian Media is hyping the whole issue.

They have abso – bloody – lutely glorified the issue. Many of us are here to build our future and fulfill our dreams. If you have faith in yourself and if you can be yourself and behave properly with people of other nationalities you will definitely be successful here. If we could respect the culture and respect the knowledge delivered to us, we would be a little more mature in handling matters such as this. It is important that each one of us who come here remember the reason why we are here and work towards achieving it and not indulge into things that could bring us trouble.

Many people have asked me if they should change their plans and go to another country. I would like to ask you when you are in INDIA whether you can leave your house unlocked in India and go for a holiday, whether you can keep your main door open all day and night and happily resort to watching movies in your bedroom? Whether you can let ur grandparents live alone at home when you are off to college? whether you can trust the servant you works at your place ?
Now that I am in AUSTRALIA I can happily say “YES” to the above questions.

How many people are stabbed in INDIA every hour? What about the ones who are murdered and killed in road accidents every hour in India!! Why doesn’t one raise his voice against those Indians!! Why is India not questioned now? Why can’t CNN IBN question the public on such cases? Why can’t it hold debates and create fake videos and make fake stories over and over again?
One Indian is stabbed with a screw driver in a different land and the whole country is blamed for!! The whole education system is held to be wrong!! The Society is blamed to be fake!!
AUSTRALIA IS NOT A RACISIT SOCIETY.
As I write this I can’t be sure whether I will come across racism in Australia. But I am confident about myself that I can pull it off. I am confident that I survive it. I am confident that it is not a big issue to face racism.

Remember the days you were ragged by your seniors in college, it is probably something similar. It is up to us to take it sportily or seriously.

It is a beautiful country, come and fullfill your dreams, it will welcome you with open arms, it will never hesitate to make you feel comfortable where ever you are, in whatever condition you are, it will never make you feel home sick. Though my heart resides in INDIA and will be there for the rest of my life, Brisbane is my new home till I full fill my dreams, it could be your's some day.
So don't hesitate, pack your bags and embrace it whole heartedly. If you don't study here, you are sure to miss something big in life. What is the use of regretting late ??

--- The above statement is OUTRIGHTLY comical young lady... Crime is a significant problem in ALL societies, maybe the current attacks may have nothing to do with racism in general and are purely hate or agression based. But claiming a preposterous proposition like the one above is absolutely bizzare...

It is comical i agree. But i would like you to stay away from home in India and live somewhere abroad and taste reality, may then what sounds comical could sound a little more sensible..

Appreciate your honest opinion, Anonymous...

Well I totally agree on your stance on Racism and over-exaggeration of this issue in India. To add to it, So called "Students" don't have the actual aim of studying here. I am staying in Melbourne which was in the news recently and witnessed the protest here. There was definitely need for such a protest because the incidents were happening almost everyday and ironically wer'nt reported in the media. although, I feel there was no need of violence and stayback there overnight as it will (and has) made the matter worse.

But I don't understand the concept of "Curry Bashing"? If its not the racist nature then where has the term evolved?

I know its the act of those cowards who I dont know how grab fun when they see some1 getting beaten up by them!??? As most of the crimes happen at public places not at late night but around 9 pm and in one case in broad daylight, I was shocked by the Police statement that "If u r not safe there change ur location"!!! I dont know how is the situation there (Brisbane), but Melbourne is not a haven nowadays. I would rather spend 25$ of petrol and commute in peak hour traffic for 1 hour rather than catch a train and increase my probability of getting stabbed by a screwdriver!

Hi Sid,

I truly understand your emotions, and do realize the fact that if i were u in Melbourne, and would have gone through the same mayhem, then obviously i would have been shattered and would have second thoughts of returning home..

I am probably lucky that way, and touch wood, things here in Brisbane are pretty normal. Its a laid back city and there isn't much of a havoc created here.

The whole idea about aimless INDIANS is so true.. Many of the readers of our comments, would not really believe this point.. BUT THE FACT REMAINS THE SAME - THERE ARE SOME INDIAN STUDENTS HERE WHO ARE AIMLESS, and spend most of the time as hooligans and create a bad name for themselves and our country. However not all of them are bad, most of the students come out with flying colours, and make their country proud..

Under such circumstances, all we can do is take care of ourselves and be in the best behavior possible and make sure that we don't provoke the natives..

Totally disagree. You have painted a fish bowl world view here. There is a big bad world out there young lady. Unless you come out of your comfy uni room you won’t know anything about it. The attacks are very much racial in nature. And Australian society has a VERY strong under current of racist elements. And no; Australia is not a racist society, but Australia does have a very large minority of bigots. Google any stories about Indian attacks, you can see that Majority of the Aussie commentators (as in have your say feedback-not columnists) are either justifying the attacks OR blaming immigration. Hardly any one blames these faceless attackers.

And stop making bizarre and outrageous claims like "Indian students here act rude/indecent". Or India has more crime. SO WHAT?? India may or may not have a high crime rate; Indian students here may or may not be pathetic losers. So what?? That’s NOT THE POINT. None of this can justify attacks followed by racial taunts. Students are here legally & if they misbehave or break the law, let the law take its own course. Attacking by locals is not the solution. Also there is a HUGE difference between “crime” and “Racial crimes. So please stop commenting about issues you are totally ignorant about. Indian media might have exaggerated the issue , but did you EVER read any stories about Indian attacks in Aussie media BEFORE Indian media went overdrive? NO!!! So; Indian media did a great favor to Indians here. Now you can see Aussie media also reporting such incidents.
